Russian President Putin praises PM Modi’s leadership, lauds India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Russia sees India as a reliable partner with an independent foreign policy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and underlined how initiatives like “Make in India” have helped the country make huge progress in recent years. He made these remarks during an interaction with university students in the Kaliningrad Region on “Russian Student Day.”

“India has one of the highest rates of economic development and growth in the world, and that too is due to the leadership qualities of the Prime Minister. It was during his leadership that India reached such a pace,” Putin was quoted as saying in the interaction with students, according to the Russian television network RT.

Foreign policy

The 71-year-old leader, who is running for another presidential term in March, lauded India’s economic development, which he attributed to Modi’s leadership. He stressed that Russia can rely on India as he expressed confidence that New Delhi won’t engage in strategic games against them on the international stage.

Putin said Russia is one of the highest investors in the country and underlined the country’s commitment to invest in India. He cited a $23 billion investment by Rosneft in areas including an oil refinery, gas stations, and a port. “And there are also plans for the future,” he added.

Modi-Putin Phone Call

Modi earlier this month discussed regional and global issues with Putin and agreed to chalk out a roadmap for future initiatives. “We also had a useful exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including Russia’s Presidency of the BRICS,” Modi said in a social media post on January 15. In a separate statement, the Kremlin said that the two leaders expressed interest in further intensifying bilateral ties and touched upon the issue of Ukraine.

Last month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also visited Russia, as a part of the ongoing high-level exchanges between the two strategic partners. During his visit, Jaishankar called on Putin and held discussions. In Moscow, the two sides inked three documents, including the Kudan Kulam Nuclear Power Plants, an MoU on cooperation in pharmaceuticals and a Protocol on Foreign Office Consultation.
