GUWAHATI: A photograph of a suspended United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader in Assam sparked controversy ahead of Lok Sabha polls. In the viral image, Benjamin Basumatary, suspended from BJP ally UPPL a month ago, is seen lying on a bed with a stack of Rs 500 notes, clad only in a traditional “gamosa”.
UPPL chief Pramod Boro clarified on X that Basumatary “was suspended from the party on Jan 10…after receiving a letter from the Harisingha Block Committee of the party on January 5.” The block committee had cited complaints of corruption and misuse of funds in govt schemes against Basumatary. Basumatary defended himself, saying the photo is five years old and was taken during a party where he posed with borrowed money for fun.
Opposition parties criticised the BJP-led alliance, of which UPPL is a part, accusing them of corruption. Leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia of Congress condemned the incident on X, calling it a “blatant display of corruption” that warrants immediate action.
