TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Monday marks the start of tax season. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is launching a new pilot program in several states.

The IRS is rolling out Direct File in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington State and Wyoming.

According to leaders with the department, the new, free program is an online tool to walk users step-by-step through the tax filing process. Real-time support is also available through the system.

Initially, the program is available for government employees in the previously mentioned select states. If the program is successful, access could expand to private sector employees by March.

The new method is an effort to simplify the filing process, however, it is not replacing any other filing options. The deadline for filing taxes or requesting a six-month extension is April 15.

Tax brackets are staying the same this year with the top rate remaining at 37%. The standard deduction increase for this year are as follows:

  • Single filers – $13,850
  • Married joint filers – $27,700
  • Heads of household – $20,800
